Everything for sale ... just because the univ as a campus agreement with dear microsoft they figure we should stick with their tech - VB ASP-IIS-SQLserver win2000 - instead of open source tech. Surfing for code examples to learn how to do what i want and most of the stuff is "here

re: open source
I'm with Greg on this one. By all means, tell any of us here a little about the kinds of things that you want to do and we'll try to help. I've been in a similar situation, in that I was limited to MS/Windows at work, but learned a lot about open source tools (Apache, MySQL, PHP and Perl) through Windows ports. This stood me in good stead for when I switched my personal computer to Linux, so now I work mostly on that and on the work PC only when necessary!
Other arguments aside, your university has made a serious mistake simply because the VB-ASP-IIS-SQLServer setup is very flawed in terms of security, speed and stability.
Ouch!
I don't know where to begin with this since I feel very strongly about the open source movement. The agreement your university has with Microsoft aside, what hurts me most is your comment about surfing for code examples. If the open source movement had not reached the maturity it has today I don't think I would have been able to make the progress I have with my coding skills.
I have taught myself most of what I know in terms of programming. The way I have done this is by following other peoples examples. No open source, no examples.
However I would ask if this is some kind of requirement of your project because using Microsoft does not necessarily limit your access to open source tools. Python, Perl, Java et. al. have ports to windows, with strong support and followings ? It seems very very wrong that you could be limited in your choice of tools by an agreement your university has with Microsoft. I hope I am mistaken ?
Unfortunatelly I do not know of any good VB code repositories, I'll ask around. Feel free to post the question as a story to the site, maybe with some details of the types of softare and hope that others may know ?
